Minnetonka’s SurCode 5.1 Dolby Digital encoder is a window’s based software encoder for producing Mono, and Stereo up to 5.1 Dolby Digital encoded tracks. They have a stereo version of this encoder that is cheaper in price. Both are easy to use. Dolby Digital significantly reduces the file size which allows both video and 5.1 audio to be played back on a DVD-Video. The size of the reduction is typically 8 times smaller than the original. This allows more bandwidth for the video.

This program will produce DVD compliant 5.1 audio files. The program accepts up to (6) WAV or AIFF files at 48kHz samplerate and either 16 or 24 bit depth (non-floating point type). It can output either a AC3 file or a Dolby Digital WAV file. The AC3 file is used for DVD-Video creation while the Dolby Digital Wav can be used to output via a SPDIF port to a surround sound decoder for full 5.1 surround sound playback. The encoder can also be used to encode WAV or AIFF files at 44.1kHz to a Dolby Digital WAV output file. This file can also be burned on to a CDR as you would any other WAV file for redbook (Audio CD) playback. See (Kelly Industries – Put Dolby Digital on to a CD).

If you plan on using SurCode for stereo files then they will have to be split in to two mono WAV or AIFF files. This can take a bit of time especially on long files over 30 minutes. Version 2 adds a few enhancements which includes a decoder that checks the encoded material. It also comes with a batch mode for automating repetitive tasks.
